PrEP
What is PrEP
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of HIV medication by HIV negative people to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Truvada is the brand name of the medication currenlty used as PrEP both here in Australia and around the world.
PrEP vs PEP, whats the difference?
PrEP is taken before a possible high risk exposure to HIV. While PEP is taken after a possible high risk exposure to HIV.
So where can we access PrEP in Australia?
The first step, if you think PrEP might be right for you, is to speak with your Doctor. Fortunately, Dr Rosevear, Dr Simmons, Dr Neilsen and Dr Williams are all experienced in sexual health and speak with lots of patients about PrEP.
PrEP was listed on the PBS as of 1st April 2018. This means that you can ask your Doctor for a prescription and the PBS will subsidise a large portion of the cost for you.
If you are not eligible for Medicare the following 3 options may be applicable to you still.
Option 1 - Private script for brand label Truvada purchased locally you would likely spend between $840 - $900 per month.
Option 2 - Private script for generic Truvada imported from overseas
Generic versions (not brand name) of Truvada can be purchased online with an Australian prescription. If your Doctor agrees PrEP is a good idea and provides you with a prescription for generic Truvada, keep reading for further tips.
Option 3 - PrEP trial
Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria all have PrEP trials currently running. You may be eligible to participate in a trial so please follow the links below to check out more information.
Queensland residents please visit the QPrEPd site.
New South Wales residents please visit the EPIC-NSW site.
Victorian residents please visit the PrEPX site.
How do I access PrEP online?
You can import generic Truvada from an overseas supplier under Australia’s Personal Importation Scheme for Medicines (IPU). Under this scheme you can legally import generic Truvada for personal use with a valid Australian prescription.
Online pharmacies where you can order generic PrEP include:
- DYNAMix International
- ALL DAY CHEMIST
- AIDS DRUGS ONLINE
Stonewall Medical Centre does not recommend, neither promote nor endorse any stockist, outlet, brand or form of prescription medication. We provide this information for your own consideration with your Doctor or sexual health Specialist.
How much does PrEP cost?
Now that PrEP has been listed on the PBS, 1 months supply with a valid script should cost you around $40 - $50 per month.
If you purchase generic Truvada from an overseas chemist the prices vary. When last checked prices ranged from $190 - $315 for 3 months supply.
