Voluntary Assisted Dying
Since January 1st, 2023, Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) has been made available in Queensland. By the end of 2023, it will be accessible in all states across Australia, with the territories to follow suit shortly. VAD offers individuals with a terminal illness the option of receiving a substance that peacefully ends their life. This substance can either be self-administered or administered by a medical professional. VAD aims to offer more choices for those nearing the end of their lives, and it should be considered alongside other treatment options and palliative care.
Dr. Neil Simmons has been a registered VAD practitioner since March 2023. He provides comprehensive assessments and prescribes the appropriate VAD substance to eligible individuals. It’s important to note that these assessments are not conducted at home or in hospitals; patients are required to visit our practice.
There are six eligibility criteria for receiving VAD in Queensland. For a detailed description, please refer to the Queensland Health website – Voluntary assisted dying | Queensland Health.
If you would like to consult with Dr. Neil regarding Voluntary Assisted Dying, please contact our reception team at 07 3857 1222 and inform them that you would like to schedule an appointment for VAD. This will ensure that the appropriate amount of time is allocated for your consultation. Please be aware that due to capacity limitations, Dr. Neil may not always be able to accommodate new patients. In such cases, we will refer you to the VAD support service at Queensland Health – Queensland voluntary assisted dying support service (QVAD-Support)

Hence, Dr Simmons is charging an out-of-pocket cost. All out-of-pockets costs are negotiable; Dr Simmons does not want money to be a barrier to care.
